Some engagement sessions simply feel effortless, and Mariel and Jeff's session at the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden was exactly that.

Nestled in Arcadia just outside Pasadena, the Arboretum is one of my favorite locations for engagement photography in Southern California. With lush gardens, desert landscapes, winding pathways, towering trees, and colorful seasonal blooms, it offers an incredible amount of variety without ever needing to leave the property.

As a Los Angeles engagement photographer, I always encourage couples to choose a location that reflects how they naturally spend time together. Rather than rushing from one backdrop to another, the Arboretum invites you to slow down, explore, and simply enjoy being together—which almost always leads to the most meaningful photographs.

Why We Chose the Los Angeles County Arboretum

There are only a handful of locations I'll never say no to photographing, and the Los Angeles County Arboretum is always near the top of that list.

I've photographed engagement sessions here for years, yet no two visits have ever looked the same.

While many people think of it as one large botanical garden, it's really a collection of completely different environments connected by quiet walking paths. Around one corner you'll discover towering eucalyptus trees and shaded trails. Minutes later you're surrounded by desert gardens, tropical greenery, blooming flowers, historic architecture, and open landscapes with views of the San Gabriel Mountains.

Every season transforms the gardens, making it one of the most versatile engagement photo locations in Los Angeles County.

When Mariel and Jeff mentioned they were considering the Arboretum for their engagement session, I knew we'd have endless opportunities to create something unique.

So Much Variety in One Location

One of the reasons I continue recommending the Los Angeles County Arboretum for engagement sessions is because it's difficult to find another location in Southern California that offers this much variety.

Within a single afternoon we photographed among colorful spring flowers, quiet garden paths, towering trees, dramatic desert landscapes, hidden benches, and lush greenery.

Looking through their final gallery almost feels like we visited several different locations throughout Los Angeles.

In reality, everything happened in one place.

That variety allows every couple's gallery to feel personal without needing to spend hours driving between locations.

Golden Hour at the Arboretum

As the afternoon slowly turned into evening, the gardens began to glow.

Golden sunlight filtered through the trees, creating the soft, warm light photographers hope for during every engagement session.

Combined with the changing scenery and Mariel and Jeff's easygoing personalities, it created one of those evenings that reminds me why I love photographing engagement sessions.

Not because of the flowers.

Not because of the location.

But because every couple experiences a place differently, and documenting those little moments is what makes every session completely unique.
